Voorwaarde zonder 'als'

Conditional without als: Heeft u vragen, dan…

C1 · Advanced · ≈ 24 min

Almost every letter from a Dutch organisation ends with the sentence Heeft u nog vragen, dan kunt u contact met ons opnemen. There is no als here — the verb in first position does the job of the conjunction. The polite Mocht u verhinderd zijn… — should you be unable to attend… and the expression of regret Had ik het maar geweten! — if only I had known! are built the same way. This is standard written language: you should recognise such sentences immediately and be able to write them confidently, with the word order right.

Four forms

Conditional without als and its “translation” with als
FormExampleSame with als
verb firstHeeft u vragen, dan …Als u vragen heeft, …
mocht + infinitiveMocht u verhinderd zijn, dan …Als u onverhoopt verhinderd bent, …
unreal conditionHad je het gevraagd, dan had ik geholpen.Als je het had gevraagd, had ik geholpen.
regret with maarHad ik het maar geweten!Ik wou dat ik het had geweten.

Mocht here does not mean “was allowed to”, but “if by any chance, if by some unforeseen event”. The infinitive goes to the end: Mocht de trein uitvallen, dan… This is the most polite form of conditional — it is popular in letters and announcements.

Word order

  • The condition comes first, so the main clause uses inversion: Heeft u vragen, dan kunt u bellen.
  • Dan almost always stands at the beginning of the main clause; without it, the phrase sounds incomplete.
  • If the main clause is an imperative sentence, dan moves inside: Heeft u vragen, neem dan contact op.
  • The condition itself follows the usual subordinate clause word order, but with the verb moved to the front: Mocht u het formulier niet ontvangen hebben, …

Common mistakes

✕ Not like this

Heeft u vragen, dan u kunt ons bellen.

✓ Correct

Heeft u vragen, dan kunt u ons bellen.

If you have any questions, you can call us.

Why: dan takes first position in the main clause, so the verb comes next: dan kunt u.

✕ Not like this

Mocht u verhinderd bent, laat het ons weten.

✓ Correct

Mocht u verhinderd zijn, laat het ons dan weten.

Should you be unable to attend, please let us know.

Why: After mocht — infinitive at the end, not a finite verb.

✕ Not like this

Als heeft u vragen, dan kunt u bellen.

✓ Correct

Heeft u vragen, dan kunt u bellen. / Als u vragen heeft, kunt u bellen.

If you have any questions, you can call.

Why: Either als with subordinate clause order, or verb first without als — you cannot mix them.

✕ Not like this

Heb ik het maar geweten!

✓ Correct

Had ik het maar geweten!

If only I had known!

Why: Regret about the past is only expressed in the past tense.

Regret and wish

Had ik maar…, Was ik maar…

  • Had ik dat maar eerder geweten!

If only I had known that earlier!

    Past, which cannot be changed.

  • Was ik maar thuisgebleven.

I wish I had stayed at home.

  • Wist ik het antwoord maar!

If only I knew the answer!

Present: to know now, but I don't.

  • Kon ik maar wat vaker thuiswerken.

If only I could work from home more often.

  • Had je het gevraagd, dan had ik je geholpen.

If you had asked, I would have helped you.

    Unreal condition: you didn't ask — I didn't help.

  • Was de trein op tijd geweest, dan hadden we de aansluiting gehaald.

If the train had arrived on time, we would have made our connection.
