Connectors in business texts: aangezien, mits, tenzij

B2 · Upper intermediate · ≈ 24 min

Everyday omdat and als are clear to everyone. But in a contract you'll read indien, in a letter from an official body — aangezien, and in a subsidy condition — mits. This isn't just stylistic: mits and tenzij mean opposite things, and confusing them means misunderstanding the condition entirely.

Reason: aangezien, daar, nu

Colloquial and formal
ColloquialFormalNuance
omdataangezienneutral-formal “since”
omdatdaarliterary, slightly archaic
nu … dusnu“now that”: reason based on a new situation
wantimmersnot a conjunction, but an adverb: “after all”, doesn't change word order

Immers is the only one in this list after which the verb doesn't need to go to the end: Hij komt niet; hij is immers ziek.

Condition: indien, mits, tenzij

Three conditions that shouldn't be confused
ConjunctionMeaningExample
indienif (formal als)Indien u niet reageert, vervalt de aanvraag.
mitsprovided that — only if this is metU krijgt korting, mits u vooraf betaalt.
tenzijunless — an exception to the ruleDe cursus gaat door, tenzij het gaat sneeuwen.
voor zoverinsofar as (within what is known)Voor zover ik weet, is er geen bezwaar ingediend.
opdatin order that (purpose), very literaryWij sturen een herinnering, opdat u de termijn niet mist.

Check: mits can be replaced by “only if”, tenzij by “except when”. If the replacement sounds opposite, the wrong conjunction has been chosen.

You'll get the subsidy provided you submit the application on time.

Why: A timely application is a condition for receiving, not an obstacle.

✕ Not like this

De vergadering gaat door, mits iedereen ziek is.

✓ Correct

De vergadering gaat door, tenzij iedereen ziek is.

The meeting will go ahead unless everyone is ill.

Why: Illness is an exception that cancels the meeting.

✕ Not like this

Indien u vragen heeft, u kunt ons bellen.

✓ Correct

Indien u vragen heeft, kunt u ons bellen.

If you have any questions, you can call us.

Why: The subordinate clause comes first, so the main clause starts with the verb: kunt u.
