Text structure: paragraph, kernzin, betoog

C1 · Advanced · ≈ 25 min

In Dutch secondary schools, pupils learn three terms: uiteenzetting — expository text, beschouwing — reflective essay and betoog — argumentative essay. And one rule: every paragraph begins with a key sentence (kernzin). That's why Dutch readers skim the first sentences of paragraphs and expect to understand the whole text from them. An essay with the main idea hidden in the middle of a paragraph comes across as muddled — even if the grammar is flawless.

Three text types

uiteenzetting, beschouwing, betoog
TypeGoalTypical ending
de uiteenzettingexplain how something works or why it happenssummary: Kortom, …
de beschouwingconsider different viewpoints, weigh pros and consbalanced conclusion: Alles afwegend …
het betoogconvince of one's positionposition and call to action: Daarom moet …

Confusing them is a common mistake: a beschouwing where the author tries to persuade from the first line sounds like a betoog, and a betoog without a counter-argument sounds like propaganda. Exams and employers often explicitly state which type of text they expect.

Paragraph and kernzin

  • One idea — one paragraph. A new idea means a new paragraph, even if it's short.
  • Kernzin — first. Most often it stands at the beginning of the paragraph; at the end only if the paragraph is structured as a conclusion drawn from examples.
  • Followed by support: an argument, example, figure, or quote. Each sentence answers the question “why is this so?” or “what does this look like?”.
  • Connection to the next paragraph — with the first word: Daarnaast, Toch, Een tweede argument is …
  • Check: read only the first sentences of the paragraphs. If the entire text is understandable from them, the structure is fine.
