De conjunctief in vaste formules
Fossilised subjunctive: zij het, het zij zo
C1 · Advanced · ≈ 20 min · setting: Den Haag, Delft
The subjunctive mood (conjunctief) has almost disappeared in Dutch, but it has left traces: fixed expressions where the verb is in an unusual form. For example: Leve de koning!, Het zij zo, een verbetering, zij het een kleine, Het moet lukken, koste wat het kost. You don't need to conjugate these; you just need to recognise them and use them appropriately. In a newspaper column, zij het and hoe het ook zij sound natural, but in conversation, they sound formal.
