Irrealis en hypothese

The unreal: zou hebben, mocht, stel dat

B2 · Upper intermediate · ≈ 25 min

Als ik het geweten had, was ik gekomen — a sentence about something that didn't happen. Such phrases are needed to explain, apologise, review a mistake at work, or discuss a decision that was made incorrectly. Their form is recognisable, but it's also the one that most often falls apart: you get als ik zou weten instead of als ik geweten had.

Main clause forms

What follows “if”
TenseSubordinate clauseMain clause
nowals ik tijd hadzou ik meegaan
now, verb zijn/hebbenals ik rijk washad ik het allang gekocht
in the pastals ik het geweten hadzou ik zijn gekomen
in the past, shorterals ik het geweten hadwas ik gekomen
without alsHad ik het geweten, dan was ik gekomen

The short form (was ik gekomen instead of zou ik zijn gekomen) sounds more natural and is more common in spoken language. Both are correct.

Condition without als

  • Had ik dat eerder geweten, dan had ik anders gehandeld.

Had I known this earlier, I would have acted differently.

Verb in first position instead of als — a very common technique.

  • Was het weer beter geweest, dan waren er meer mensen gekomen.

Had the weather been better, more people would have come.

  • Zou u dat willen bevestigen?

    Could you confirm this?

zou as politeness, not as a condition.

  • Ik zou maar op tijd komen.

If I were you, I'd be on time.

zou + maar — emphatic advice.

mocht: cautious assumption

  • Mocht introduces an unlikely or delicate condition: Mocht u vragen hebben, dan kunt u bellen.
  • The form is fixed: mocht is used regardless of the narrative tense.
  • The main clause almost always contains dan.
  • This is a standard polite ending for a business letter — there, als sounds cruder.

Common mistakes

✕ Not like this

Als ik zou het weten, zou ik het zeggen.

✓ Correct

Als ik het wist, zou ik het zeggen.

If I knew, I'd say.

Why: In the subordinate clause the verb goes to the end, and the imperfect is most natural: als ik het wist.

✕ Not like this

Als ik het had geweten, zou ik gekomen zijn geweest.

✓ Correct

Als ik het geweten had, was ik gekomen.

If I had known, I would have come.

Why: A double perfect is redundant.

✕ Not like this

Mocht u vragen heeft, belt u ons.

✓ Correct

Mocht u vragen hebben, dan kunt u ons bellen.

Should you have any questions, you can call us.

Why: After mocht the verb is in its dictionary form: hebben. And the main clause usually gets dan.

✕ Not like this

Stel dat het regent, dan zouden we binnen zouden blijven.

✓ Correct

Stel dat het regent, dan blijven we binnen.

Suppose it rains — then we'll stay inside.

Why: One indicator of conditionality is sufficient.

✕ Not like this

Had ik het geweten, dan ik was gekomen.

✓ Correct

Had ik het geweten, dan was ik gekomen.

Had I known, I would have come.

Why: After dan the verb comes straight away: dan was ik gekomen. The version without dan, Had ik het geweten, ik was gekomen, is also heard in speech.
