Toen, als of wanneer?

The three “whens”: toen, als, wanneer

A2 · Elementary · ≈ 20 min

The English word “when” covers three different situations, but Dutch distinguishes between them: toen for a single event in the past, als for a condition, repetition, or the future, and wanneer for a question. A mistake here is very noticeable to the ear, but the rule is simple.

Comparison
WoordWhen to useVoorbeeld
alsa repeated action (even in the past!)Als ik vroeger ziek was, bracht mijn moeder soep.

The key to the difference between toen and als in the past is one time or every time. Toen ik in Rotterdam woonde (that period) versus Als ik in Rotterdam was, ging ik altijd naar die markt (every time I was there).

1. toen — past, one time

  • Toen ik gisteren thuiskwam, was er niemand.

When I came home yesterday, no one was there.

  • Toen we in Delft kwamen wonen, spraken we bijna geen Nederlands.

When we moved to Delft, we hardly spoke any Dutch.

  • Ik was net weg, toen hij belde.

I had just left when he called.

toen can also be in the middle of the sentence.

If the weather is good tomorrow, we'll go cycling.

The future is expressed with the present tense — this is normal.

  • Als ik moe ben, drink ik koffie.

When I get tired, I drink coffee.

    A repeated action.

    If you're nearby, drop in.

In the past, when it snowed, we used to go skating on the pond.

Repetition in the past — still als.

3. wanneer — question

  • Wanneer begint de cursus?

    When does the course start?

  • Wanneer ben je terug uit Nijmegen?

When will you return from Nijmegen?

I don't know yet when I'll be free.

Indirect question: the verb moves to the end.

  • Vraag even wanneer de bezorger komt.

Ask when the courier will arrive.

Dialoog — Hoe was het in het begin?

A conversation about the first months in the Netherlands.

  1. Marjolein

Wanneer zijn jullie hier eigenlijk komen wonen?

And when did you actually move here?

    Question → wanneer.

  2. Alex

In september. Toen we aankwamen, regende het drie weken lang.

In September. When we arrived, it rained for three weeks straight.

Single event in the past → toen.

  3. Marjolein

Typisch Nederland! En spraken jullie al Nederlands?

Typical Netherlands! And did you already speak Dutch?

  4. Alex

Nauwelijks.

Hardly. When someone asked me something, I usually answered in English.

Repetition in the past → als.

  5. Marjolein

    En nu?

    And now?

  6. Alex

Now I always try to speak Dutch. If I don't know a word, I just ask.

  7. Marjolein

Goed bezig!

Good for you! Let me know when you want to practise.

    Indirect question → wanneer.

4. Veelgemaakte fouten

✕ Not like this

When I was little, I lived abroad.

Why: “When I was little” is one period in the past, so toen. als is for “whenever” and the future.

✕ Not like this

Toen het regent, blijf ik thuis.

✓ Correct

Als het regent, blijf ik thuis.

When it rains, I stay at home.

Why: “When(ever) it rains, I stay in” happens every time, so als. toen is only for the past.

✕ Not like this

Wanneer ik thuiskwam, was er niemand.

✓ Correct

Toen ik thuiskwam, was er niemand.

When I got home, there was nobody there.

Why: A single past event (“when I got home”) takes toen. wanneer and als are for “every time” and the future.

✕ Not like this

Toen ik klaar ben, bel ik je.

✓ Correct

Als ik klaar ben, bel ik je.

When I'm done, I'll call you.

Why: “When I'm done” is in the future, so als. toen is only for the past.

✕ Not like this

Als komt hij?

✓ Correct

Wanneer komt hij?

When is he coming?

Why: The question “When?” is wanneer. You can't start a question with als.

✕ Not like this

Toen ik binnenkwam, hij zat te bellen.

✓ Correct

Toen ik binnenkwam, zat hij te bellen.

When I came in, he was on the phone.

Why: If the sentence starts with “toen…”, the verb comes straight after the comma: zat hij.
