De bijzin: het werkwoord gaat naar achteren

Subordinate clauses with dat, omdat, als

A2 · Elementary · ≈ 28 min

At A1 level, you already saw this with omdat. Now we'll turn it into a system: after a subordinating conjunction, the entire sentence structure changes — the subject comes immediately after the conjunction, and all verbs move to the very end. Mastering this will allow you to speak in long sentences, rather than choppy phrases.

Subordinate clause structure
  • dat hij morgen komt.

    …that he's coming tomorrow.

…that we can't come on Friday.

    Voegwoorddat

With two verbs, both orders are possible: …dat ik morgen moet werken and …dat ik morgen werken moet. The first option sounds more modern and is more common.

1. Conjunctions that introduce a subordinate clause

datthatIk denk dat het morgen regent.
omdatbecauseIk blijf thuis omdat ik ziek ben.

toenwhen (in the past)Toen ik binnenkwam, zat hij te bellen.
terwijlwhileTerwijl ik kookte, deed hij de was.

nadatafterNadat we gegeten hadden, gingen we wandelen.
hoewelalthoughHoewel het regende, gingen we fietsen.

2. Verbs typically followed by dat

Ready-made sentence beginnings
BeginningTranslationVoorbeeld
Ik denk dat…I think that…Ik denk dat het te laat is.
Ik weet dat…I know that…Ik weet dat hij in Haarlem woont.
Ik hoop dat…I hope that…Ik hoop dat je snel beter wordt.
Ik vind dat…I believe that…Ik vind dat we moeten wachten.
Ik zie dat…I see that…Ik zie dat de winkel dicht is.
Hij zegt dat…He says that…Hij zegt dat hij later komt.
Het klopt dat…It is true that…Het klopt dat ik nieuw ben.
Ik ben blij dat…I am glad that…Ik ben blij dat je er bent.

You can't simply drop dat the way English drops that: Ik denk het regent morgen is a mistake. In conversation people use a main clause with denk ik instead: Het regent morgen, denk ik.

3. Subordinate clause first

A subordinate clause can come first. In this case, it occupies the first position of the main clause — and the verb in the main clause immediately follows.

  • Omdat het regende, bleven we thuis.

Because it was raining, we stayed at home.

After the comma, the verb bleven comes immediately, then we.

  • Als je in Haarlem bent, kom dan even langs.

If you're in Haarlem, drop by.

  • Toen ik binnenkwam, zaten ze al aan tafel.

When I came in, they were already sitting at the table.

  • Voordat ik naar bed ga, lees ik altijd even.

Before going to bed, I always read a little.

4. Veelgemaakte fouten

✕ Not like this

Ik denk dat het is te laat.

✓ Correct

Ik denk dat het te laat is.

I think it's too late.

Why: After dat the verb goes to the end: dat het te laat is. The same happens after omdat, of and similar words.

✕ Not like this

Omdat het regende, we bleven thuis.

✓ Correct

Omdat het regende, bleven we thuis.

Because it was raining, we stayed at home.

Why: If the sentence starts with “omdat…”, the verb comes straight after the comma, then “we”: bleven we.

✕ Not like this

Ik weet niet als hij komt.

✓ Correct

Ik weet niet of hij komt.

I don't know if he's coming.

Why: “I don't know if he's coming” — this “if” (= whether) is of. als is only “if” in a condition (“if it rains”) or “when”.

✕ Not like this

…dat ik moet morgen werken.

✓ Correct

…dat ik morgen moet werken.

…that I have to work tomorrow.

Why: After dat both verbs go to the end, with “tomorrow” (morgen) before them: dat ik morgen moet werken.

✕ Not like this

Ik ben blij dat je bent er.

✓ Correct

Ik ben blij dat je er bent.

I'm glad you're here.

Why: After dat the verb goes to the end: dat je er bent — “that you're here”.

✕ Not like this

Hij zei dat hij kwam later.

✓ Correct

Hij zei dat hij later kwam.

He said he'd come later.

Why: After dat the verb comes last, with “later” before it: dat hij later kwam.
