Reporting and quoting: stellen, beweren, betogen

C1 · Advanced · ≈ 25 min

De minister zegt, stelt, beweert, betoogt, erkent — five verbs, five different attitudes of the author towards what is being said. Beweren subtly tells the reader “but I'm not sure about it”, erkennen — “he admitted something unpleasant”, and De directeur zou de cijfers hebben aangepast — “that's what people say, but it hasn't been proven”. At C1 level, choosing such a verb is part of the text's meaning, not just a synonym for variety.

Unverified information

  • De directeur zou de cijfers hebben aangepast.

The director allegedly adjusted the figures.

zou + hebben + past participle — an assertion about the past that has not been confirmed.

The cabinet will reportedly make a decision next week.

  • Naar verluidt is de overname al rond.

The takeover has reportedly already been agreed upon.

naar verluidt — “reportedly”, source not named.

According to informed sources, the merger will not take place.

The suspect allegedly threatened the man with a knife.

Presumption of innocence: journalists write this way until a court decision.

Citing sources

  • Reporting with a name: Volgens De Vries (2021) is het effect klein. — inversion after volgens.
  • Author's position: De Vries (2021) stelt dat het effect klein is.
  • Agreement with the source: Zoals De Vries (2021) terecht opmerkt, … — terecht indicates that you agree with them.
  • Direct quote — in quotation marks, with the exact text: De Vries noemt het effect ‘verwaarloosbaar’ (2021, p. 14).
  • Paraphrasing ≠ quoting: when paraphrasing, change both the words and the word order, but not the meaning.

Common mistakes

✕ Not like this

Volgens de minister, het plan is betaalbaar.

✓ Correct

Volgens de minister is het plan betaalbaar.

According to the minister, the plan is affordable.

Why: “volgens …” comes first, then inversion, without a comma.

✕ Not like this

De onderzoekers beweren dat hun resultaten betrouwbaar zijn.

✓ Correct

De onderzoekers stellen dat hun resultaten betrouwbaar zijn.

The researchers state that their results are reliable.

Why: “beweren” about a scientific position sounds like distrust — if that's not intended, choose “stellen”.

✕ Not like this

De verdachte heeft de man met een mes bedreigd, meldt de politie.

✓ Correct

De verdachte zou de man met een mes hebben bedreigd, meldt de politie.
