Telefoongesprek met de gemeente

A call to the municipality

B1 · Intermediate · ≈ 20 min

The telephone is the most difficult aspect of a language: you can't see the person you're talking to, it's awkward to ask them to repeat themselves, and information comes quickly. This is a conversation with a municipality employee: rescheduling an appointment, the deadline for submitting documents, and what you need to bring with you. First, listen with the text hidden — the “Show text” button isn't going anywhere.

  1. Why is the person calling?
  2. To what day and time is the appointment being moved?
  3. What deadline is given for the document and what does uiterlijk mean?
  4. What do you need to bring with you?

Standard phrases on the phone

Mag ik uw …?they ask for detailsstate the number digit by digit
Wanneer komt het u uit?they ask when it's convenientVolgende week, het liefst 's ochtends

Uiterlijk …deadlinewrite down the date immediately
Neemt u … meewhat to bringDuidelijk, dat neem ik mee
Verder nog iets?ending the conversationNee, dat was het / another question

If you didn't catch a number, there's a foolproof phrase: Kunt u dat nog een keer herhalen? It's fine to ask for a repeat, but guessing and writing it down incorrectly can be costly.
