Sinterklaas voor het eerst

Personages:
Mila, Fenna, Nora, Alex

Fenna was inmiddels haar beste vriendin.

Nora dacht even na. „Wat denk jij?” vroeg ze terug. Mila glimlachte en at haar laatste pepernoot op.

In November Mila's teacher asked the class: “Who has already put out their shoe?” All the children put their hands up except Mila. She didn't know what the teacher was talking about.

After school Fenna explained. By now Fenna was her best friend. “Sinterklaas comes every year in mid-November by boat from Spain,” she said. “In the evening you put your shoe by the stove and sing a song. The next morning there's something nice in it.”

That evening Mila put her shoe by the radiator, because they didn't have a stove. She put a carrot in it for Sinterklaas's horse and sang the song Fenna had taught her. The next morning there was a chocolate letter M and a handful of pepernoten in her shoe.

On 5 December they celebrated pakjesavond at Fenna's house. Everyone had bought a present for someone else and written a poem to go with it. You had to read the poem aloud. That was the funniest part of the evening, because in the poems everyone teased each other.

Alex got a bright yellow bicycle bell with a poem about the thousand black bikes at the station. Everyone laughed. Mila got a book, and Nora a bunch of tulips — in December!

“Does Sinterklaas really exist?” Mila asked on the way home. Nora thought for a moment. “What do you think?” she asked back. Mila smiled and ate her last pepernoot.
