Emoties en karakter: hoe voel je je en hoe is iemand?

Emotions and character

A2 · Elementary · ≈ 22 min

To talk about more than just business, you need words for states and people. Here are emotions, character traits, and the main cultural rule: the Dutch understate things — instead of “great”, they’ll say niet slecht; instead of “terrible”, niet zo handig.

Tomorrow Nora has her civic integration exam. She is very nervous and sleeps badly. 'I'm really dreading it,' she says. Alex is worried: she's been so stressed for days.

After the exam she comes home. She's tired but relieved. 'How did it go?' 'Oh, it wasn't too bad. Only the speaking part was hard.'

Two weeks later the result arrives: she passed! Nora is incredibly happy and Alex is proud of her. Only Mila is a bit annoyed: she wanted a big party, but it's just cake.

Her teacher sends an email: 'Congratulations! You were always calm and patient, and very reliable with your homework.'

4. Understatement is a rule of communication

What is said and what is meant
ZinMeaning
Het gaat wel.fine, no problem
Niet slecht!pretty good
Het valt wel mee.better than expected
Dat is niet zo handig.this is inconvenient, and sometimes “this is bad”
Ik vind het lastig.this is difficult for me
Prima hoor.quite satisfactory
Ik ben er niet blij mee.I'm unhappy with this (quite a lot)
Dat had ik anders gedaan.mild criticism

Strong words like geweldig and verschrikkelijk are used less often than it seems. Therefore, “het gaat wel” is not a complaint, but a calm, neutral answer.
