Numbers, time and dates

A1 · Beginner · ≈ 25 min

The most common mistake for a beginner in the Netherlands: hearing half elf and arriving at 11:30 instead of 10:30. Here we will cover this topic completely — numbers, time, dates, and the prepositions om, op, in.

It's Monday the third of March. Alex looks at his diary: he has a lot of appointments this week.

This morning at a quarter past nine he goes to the dentist for a check-up. The bus takes twenty minutes. This afternoon at half past two he has a meeting at school.

On Wednesday he has to be at work at twenty past eight — that's 8:20. On Friday evening they go out for dinner.

And on Saturday? Then Alex has a lie-in, until about ten. On Sunday the library is closed: the opening hours are on the door.

How it sounds in real life

  • Dat is dan zeven euro vijftig, alstublieft.

    That'll be seven euros fifty.

Prices are said as: euros — cents, without the word “cent”.

  • Mijn huisnummer is vierentwintig.

    My house number is twenty-four.

  • De postcode is 6881 CD: zes acht acht een, C-D.

Postcode 6881 CD — digits are said one by one.

    Call me on 06 12 34 56 78.

3. Time: the main stumbling block

Between 20 and 40 minutes past the hour, the Dutch usually count from the “half”. This is unusual, but it’s how they speak in real life and on the radio.
