In de stad: de weg vragen en wijzen

In the city and how to ask for directions

A1 · Beginner · ≈ 20 min

Asking for directions is easy: Weet u waar … is? It’s much harder to understand the answer. That’s why the key here isn’t the question itself, but the vocabulary the Dutch use to explain the way: rechtdoor, bij de stoplichten, aan uw linkerhand.

Alex is new in town. He has to go to the town hall, but he doesn't know the way. At the station he asks a woman: 'May I ask you something? How do I get to the town hall?'

'It's not far,' she says. 'Go straight on to the traffic lights. Turn left there. Then take the first street on the right.'

'At the roundabout you have to cross. The town hall is opposite the church, next to the library. It's about a ten-minute walk. You can't miss it!'

'Thank you!' says Alex. And indeed: after ten minutes he sees the town hall.
