Diminutives and compound words

A2 · Elementary · ≈ 22 min

Two mechanisms without which Dutch doesn't sound right: -je makes a word smaller, softer and more polite (een biertje), and compound words are glued together into one long word — treinkaartje, ziektekostenverzekering. Both are covered in one lesson.

1. Which ending to choose

Five options
EndingWhenVoorbeeld
-jeafter b, d, f, g, k, p, s, tboek → boekje, kop → kopje
-tjeafter a vowel, l, n, r, wauto → autootje, stoel → stoeltje
-etjeshort vowel + l, m, n, ng, rbel → belletje, man → mannetje
-pjeafter mboom → boompje, arm → armpje
-kjewords ending in -ingkoning → koninkje, woning → woninkje

After a long vowel, it doubles before -tje: auto → autootje, café → cafeetje. The logic is the same as for plurals.

2. Why the Dutch do this

Not just “small”
FunctionVoorbeeldMeaning
Sizeeen huisje in het bosa small house
Portioneen biertje, een kopje koffieone portion, standard
Softening a requestHeb je een momentje?sounds softer than moment
UnderstatementIk heb een klusje voor je.a “little job”, not a big task
Cosinesseen avondje thuis, een weekendje wega pleasant evening, a short trip
Affectionate for peoplemeisje, jongetje, opaatjegirl, boy, grandad

That's why in a café people so often order een biertje: it sounds familiar and friendly. Een bier is also correct, just a little more matter-of-fact.
