Al, nog, pas, nog niet, niet meer

al, nog, pas: small words about time

A2 · Elementary · ≈ 22 min

Ik woon hier al drie jaar and Ik woon hier pas drie jaar — the construction is the same, but the meaning is opposite: “already three whole years” versus “only three years”. These words cannot be translated using a dictionary, but they do have a clear logic.

al and pas are not about the fact, but about the speaker's assessment. The same period can be presented as “already three years” or “only three years”.

1. al versus pas

  • — Hoe lang woon je in Tilburg? — Al drie jaar.

    — How long have you lived in Tilburg? — Three years already.

The speaker emphasises: that's quite a long time.

  • — Hoe lang woon je in Tilburg? — Pas drie maanden.

    — How long have you lived in Tilburg? — Only three months.

Emphasises: recently, still getting used to it.

  • Het is pas acht uur, we hebben tijd genoeg.

It's only eight o'clock, there's plenty of time.

  • Het is al acht uur, we moeten gaan!

It's already eight o'clock, time to go!

  • Ze is pas zestien, ze mag nog niet autorijden.

She's only sixteen, she can't drive yet.

5. Veelgemaakte fouten

✕ Not like this

Ik woon hier al drie maanden.(meaning “only three”)

✓ Correct

Ik woon hier pas drie maanden.

I've only lived here for three months.

Why: To say “only three months” you need pas. al means “three whole months already” — i.e. a long time.

✕ Not like this

Ik heb nog niet gegeten meer.

✓ Correct

Ik heb nog niet gegeten.

I haven't eaten yet.

Why: “Haven't eaten yet” is just nog niet. meer doesn't belong here: niet meer means “no longer”.

✕ Not like this

Er is niet meer koffie.

✓ Correct

Er is geen koffie meer.

There's no more coffee.

Why: When “no more” is about a thing (koffie), you say geen … meer, not niet meer.

✕ Not like this

Hij werkt hier al niet.

✓ Correct

Hij werkt hier niet meer.

He doesn't work here any more.

Why: “Doesn't work here any more” is niet meer. You can't say al niet for this.

✕ Not like this

Ben je klaar al?

✓ Correct

Ben je al klaar?

Are you ready yet?

Why: al goes before the word it belongs to: al klaar — “ready already”. It doesn't go at the end.

✕ Not like this

— Ben je al klaar? — Nee, nog.

✓ Correct

— Ben je al klaar? — Nee, nog niet.

— Are you ready yet? — No, not yet.

Why: “No, not yet” is Nee, nog niet. nog on its own means nothing here.
