De toekomst: gaan, zullen of gewoon presens

The future: gaan, zullen and the present tense

A2 · Elementary · ≈ 22 min

Dutch hardly has a separate future tense. Most often, the present tense is used with a marker word: Morgen ga ik naar Amsterdam. When a nuance is needed, gaan (a plan) or zullen (a promise, a suggestion) is used.

1. The present tense is the most common option

If it's clear from the context that you're talking about the future (there's a word like morgen, volgende week, straks, om acht uur), Dutch speakers simply use the present tense. This sounds the most natural.

  • Morgen werk ik thuis.

    Tomorrow I'm working from home.

  • De trein vertrekt om tien over acht.

    The train leaves at 8:10.

  • Volgende week beginnen de schoolvakanties.

Next week the school holidays start.

  • Straks bel ik even de huisarts.

I'll call the doctor in a bit.

straks — “a bit later today”.

2. gaan — plan and intention

  • We gaan in juli naar Spanje op vakantie.

In July we're going to Spain for a holiday.

  • Ik ga volgend jaar mijn inburgeringsexamen doen.

Next year I'm taking the integration exam.

  • Wat ga je dit weekend doen?

What are you doing this weekend?

The most common question about plans.

  • Het gaat regenen, kijk maar naar die lucht.

It's going to rain now, look at the sky.

gaan also for something that is about to happen.

3. zullen — promise and suggestion

4. Veelgemaakte fouten

✕ Not like this

Morgen ik zal werken.

✓ Correct

Morgen werk ik. / Morgen ga ik werken.

I'm working tomorrow.

Why: If you start with morgen, the verb comes next: Morgen werk ik. And with “tomorrow” the plain present is enough — no need for zal.

✕ Not like this

Ik ga naar Amsterdam gaan.

✓ Correct

Ik ga naar Amsterdam.

I'm going to Amsterdam.

Why: “I'm going to Amsterdam” is Ik ga naar Amsterdam. The second gaan is extra.

✕ Not like this

Zullen we naar de markt gaan?

Shall we go to the market?

Why: gaan goes to the very end, after “to the market”.

✕ Not like this

Ik zal je morgen bel.

✓ Correct

Ik zal je morgen bellen.

I'll call you tomorrow.

Why: After zal the verb is in its dictionary form: bellen, not bel.

✕ Not like this

Wat ga je doen morgen?

✓ Correct

Wat ga je morgen doen?

What are you doing tomorrow?

Why: doen goes to the end, with morgen before it.

✕ Not like this

✓ Correct

Volgende week ga ik verhuizen.

I'm moving next week.

Why: If you start with “next week”, the verb ga comes next and ik follows it.
