Spelling rules: short and long vowels

Why does man give us mannen, but maan gives us manen? Why does wonen turn into woon with two o's? These aren't exceptions, but a single rule about syllables. We'll explain it once, and it will cover plurals, conjugations, the past tense, and adjectives.
1. Divide into syllables
| Woord | Lettergrepen | Klinker | How it sounds |
|---|---|---|---|
| manen | ma-nen | open syllable | long “a” |
| mannen | man-nen | closed syllable | short “a” |
| wonen | wo-nen | open | long “o” |
| bossen | bos-sen | closed | short “o” |
| deuren | deu-ren | open | eu |
| kussen | kus-sen | closed | short “u” |
| Woord | Lettergrepen | Klinker | How it sounds |
|---|---|---|---|
| manen | ma-nen | open syllable | long “a” |
| mannen | man-nen | closed syllable | short “a” |
| wonen | wo-nen | open | long “o” |
| bossen | bos-sen | closed | short “o” |
| deuren | deu-ren | open | eu |
| kussen | kus-sen | closed | short “u” |
Check: pronounce the word syllable by syllable aloud. If a syllable ends in a vowel, it is long, and in writing, it is represented by a single letter.
2. Two implications
| Rule | Example | Why |
|---|---|---|
| A long vowel in an open syllable is written with one letter | maan → manen, boom → bomen, woon → wonen | ma-nen: the syllable is open, a second “a” is not needed |
| A short vowel requires a double consonant | man → mannen, bos → bossen, kat → katten | otherwise, it would be ma-nen with a long “a” |
| At the end of a word, the consonant is not doubled | ik kus, ik pak, ik zit | the end of the word is already a closed syllable |
| A long vowel in a closed syllable is written with two letters | wonen → ik woon, spelen → ik speel | otherwise, it would be read as short |

3. Two more rules: v/f and z/s
leven → ik leef — maar: wij leven
to live: I live — we live
At the end of the word, it's “f”; between vowels, it's “v” again.
reizen → ik reis — maar: wij reizen
to travel: I travel — we travel
de brief → de brieven
letter — letters
Plural restored the voiced v.
het huis → de huizen
house — houses
s between vowels changes to z.
4. Where this rule applies
| Topic | Example | What happened |
|---|---|---|
| Verb stem | wonen → ik woon | closed syllable: double o |
| Plural | kat → katten | short vowel: double t |
| Plural | raam → ramen | open syllable: single a |
| Past tense | praten → praatte | praat + te, both t's remain |
| Adjective + -e | groot → grote | gro-te: syllable is open |
| Comparative degree | dik → dikker | short vowel: double k |
| Diminutive | auto → autootje | long o before -tje is doubled |

This is why this rule appears again and again in other lessons — it is the same one.
Pairs that differ by one letter

mannen
men
Why: A short a needs a double n. Manen means “moons” (from maan).
✕ Not like this
bosen“forests”

Why: A short o needs a double s: bos-sen. With one s you would get bo-sen with a long o, as in boze (“angry”).
