Without a bank account, almost nothing is possible in the Netherlands: salary, rent, insurance. Here's all the basic vocabulary – from opening an account to automatische incasso and iDEAL, including words you'll see in a banking app.

1. The end of the month

At the end of the month Alex checks the balance of his current account. There's less in it than he thought. The rent and the energy are taken out every month by direct debit.

In the letterbox there's an invoice from the dentist. The amount is 85 euros, and it's due next week. Alex transfers it straight away with the app.

Yesterday they had dinner with friends. Alex paid for everything, and now he sends everyone a tikkie, a payment request. Within an hour the money is in his account.

A week later another letter arrives: a final demand from an online shop, with 15 euros in collection costs. 'But I've already paid!' Alex calls the shop and sends a bank statement as proof. Luckily he doesn't have to pay anything extra. He never wants to be overdrawn.

Toeslagen (huurtoeslag, zorgtoeslag, kinderopvangtoeslag) are calculated by the Belastingdienst — the tax authorities. You have to apply for them yourself; they are not automatically provided.
