Presentation and Q&A

B2 · Upper intermediate · ≈ 22 min

The second half of this recording is harder than the first: the speaker delivers a prepared text, then answers questions on the fly. Listen to how speech changes when someone stops reading from a script: pauses, slips of the tongue, and eerlijk gezegd appear.

  • Question 1: What problem does the speaker identify and what figures does he use to support it?
  • Question 2: What does he suggest doing first?
  • Question 3: Which question from the audience does he honestly answer with “I don't know”?
  • Question 4: What does he promise to send after the meeting?

Question and answer

Do they match?
QuestionAnswerAssessment
How was “three-quarters” measured?sample of 200 cases over two monthsdirect answer with method
What will happen to the archive staff?“honestly, I don't know”honest admission, question redirected
Rent or buy?rent for pilot, buy laterdirect answer with condition
How much time from us?around four hours per persona specific number, it's in the appendix

Eerlijk gezegd weet ik dat nog niet sounds better than a vague answer. In a Dutch meeting, admitting you don't know something doesn't diminish the speaker if it's followed by “I'll add it to the list of open items.”
