De imperatief: gebiedende wijs

Imperative mood: Kom binnen!

A1 · Beginner · ≈ 18 min

The imperative form in Dutch is simply the stem of the verb: Kom! Wacht! Doe! The difficulty isn't in the form, but in the tone: a bare Kom sounds like a command, that's why the Dutch add even, maar, or eens – and the phrase immediately becomes polite.

1. Small words that soften

The same request with different tones
ZinHow it sounds
Kom!a sharp command: without softening words, people rarely say it like this
Kom even.“come for a second” – neutral
Kom maar.“come on, come over” – inviting, gentle
Kom eens kijken.“pop in and have a look” – friendly
Kom je even?a question instead of a command – the most polite option
Zou je even kunnen komen?very polite, slightly formal

even – “for a moment, a little bit” – the most useful word for Dutch politeness. It turns a demand into a request.

How it sounds at home and at work

  • Doe de deur even dicht, het tocht.

Please close the door, there's a draught.

het tocht – “there's a draught”, a very common everyday word.

  • Ga maar zitten, ik kom zo bij je.

Please have a seat, I'll be right with you.

  • Vul dit formulier even in, alstublieft.

    Please fill in this form.

  • Neem je ID mee naar de gemeente.

Take your ID with you to the town hall.

  • Bel me maar als er iets is.

    Call if anything comes up.

  • Zeg het maar!

How can I help you? / Speak!

A standard phrase for shop assistants and waiters.

2. Separable verbs

The prefix moves to the end, just like in a regular sentence: opbellen → Bel me morgen op, meenemen → Neem je jas mee, binnenkomen → Kom binnen.

3. Negation and the polite form with u

Dialoog — Bezoek bij de buren

First visit to someone's home: all imperatives, and all of them friendly.

  1. Marjolein

Hoi! Kom binnen, kom binnen. Geef je jas maar.

Hi! Come in, come in. Let me take your coat.

    Thanks. What a cosy home!

  3. Marjolein

Ga lekker zitten. Wil je koffie of thee?

  5. Marjolein
