Ontkenning: niet of geen?

Negation: niet and geen

A1 · Beginner · ≈ 20 min

In Dutch, there are two words for “not”: niet and geen. The choice takes a second if you know one question: Are we negating a noun without a determiner? However, the position of niet in a sentence is a topic that even B1 learners stumble over. Let's look at the algorithm.

1. geen

  • Ik heb geen fiets.

    I don't have a bicycle.

    een fiets → geen fiets

  • We hebben geen tijd.

    We don't have time.

    Noun without an article.

  • Er is geen parkeerplaats vrij in het centrum van Utrecht.

There are no free parking spaces in the centre of Utrecht.

  • Sorry, ik spreek geen Engels — mag het in het Nederlands?

Sorry, I don't speak English — can we speak Dutch?

Language names without an article → geen.

  • Ze heeft geen kinderen.

    She doesn't have children.

Plural without an article → also geen.

2. niet

  • Before an adjective: Ik ben niet moe. Het is niet duur.
  • With a verb (negating the entire action): Ik werk vandaag niet.
  • With de/het, mijn, deze, die — also niet, not geen: Dat is niet mijn fiets. Ik ken de buurman van hiernaast niet.
  • Before a proper noun: Dat is niet Marjolein.
  • Before a prepositional phrase: Ik woon niet in Utrecht.

3. Where exactly niet goes

General rule: niet moves as far to the right as possible — to the very end. But there are things that niet “cannot overtake”: an adjective, a prepositional phrase, the prefix of a separable verb, and a second verb.
